Since 2009, Hasbro has honored one outstanding employee volunteer every year for their extraordinary dedication to making the world a better place for children and their families. Nominated and selected by fellow employees, the Hasbro Hero goes above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of children. We are proud to introduce our 2020 Hasbro Hero – Helene.
Helene is an Accounts Receivable Manager at the Hasbro UK office, avid volunteer, mother of four, and Founder and President of LOVE MISSION, an organization helping vulnerable people in the nation of Cameroon.
Helene says, “We can cure physical diseases with medicine, but the only cure for loneliness, despair, and hopelessness is love.” In many cases, widows, orphans, and children living with illness in Cameroon do not receive aid and are therefore forced to drop out of school and enter exploitative work conditions to survive. Helene used her gift for compassion to create LOVE MISSION to provide full emotional, spiritual, health, educational and financial support for vulnerable people to ultimately restore their faith and hope and enable them to build a better future.
LOVE MISSION identifies the most vulnerable people in Cameroon, including widows, orphans, children who are homeless or impacted by AIDS and Hepatitis B, and provides basic necessities, books, toys, school supplies and more. Helene organizes fundraisers and engages her UK colleagues to donate supplies, which she sends throughout the year. In addition, Helene travels to Cameroon annually to personally distribute some of the goods. In 2019, LOVE MISSION organized a successful campaign to provide access to dental care, school supplies, and education fee assistance, including the addition of a computer room for children to learn basic computer skills.
Through LOVE MISSION, Helene is building better futures for vulnerable children. By developing their talent and self-confidence, they can reintegrate and become part of society. Her vision is to empower widows and older orphans to be self-reliant by providing job-related experiences, life skills training, and apprenticeship opportunities with local businesses. Looking ahead, Helene is fundraising to build a community center in Yaoundé. It will be a space to provide ongoing support services and job training as well as temporary accommodation for those experiencing homelessness.
