At Hasbro, we know that games can have a profound positive impact for children, expose them to important life skills, inspiring their passion for learning and connecting them with their peers; that’s why we support the nonprofit Learn Fresh and their program, NBA Math Hoops.
NBA Math Hoops is a comprehensive community education program for students in grades 3-8 that strives to build fundamental math and social-emotional skills through the game of basketball. The program features a digital and physical board game, mobile app, curriculum, and community experience delivered to students in classroom and out-of-school time learning environments, with an explicit focus on serving low-income students and students of color in communities across the U.S. and abroad.
To play the basketball-themed game, students draft a team of NBA and WNBA players, and compete with their classmates to solve math problems using real player statistics, building fluency with fundamental math skills and core social-emotional competencies such as sportsmanship and grit. The core game is fun and challenging, and the program provides opportunities for inspiring in-person and virtual community events that bring the learning to life and expose students to STEM careers.
Since 2012, Hasbro has produced and donated all physical NBA Math Hoops board games used by the program, helping Learn Fresh distribute these games through afterschool programs, community centers, schools, and homes in low-income communities across the US and around the world. To date, the program has served over 350,000 students.
With so many students learning remotely in 2020, Hasbro was one financial supporter to help Learn Fresh pivot to make NBA Math Hoops accessible to students, wherever they were, by developing a web-based and mobile version of the game.
Introducing the NBA Math Hoops Mobile App!
This new math education app is available to download in the App Store and Google Play, and targets students in grades 3-8. The app replicates the mechanics of the physical NBA Math Hoops board game, and features NBA and WNBA player statistics that update in real-time! Students can compete in Quick Play mode or enter a classroom code for League Play with their peers, and unlock new players the more that they play.
According to Learn Fresh, NBA Math Hoops delivers clear academic benefits: in a 2019 study of math and SEL outcomes, students who played at least 10 NBA Math Hoops games demonstrated 33 percent gains in math fluency and 18 percent improvement with higher-order math skills related to stats and data analysis, and program participants were 30 percent more likely than a control to report growth in key attributes like leadership, grit, and resilience.
